Anne Arundel Medical Center
Length of rotation: 12 weeks (10 weeks general, 2 weeks staff relief)
Performed two weeks medical staff relief and presented three case studies.
During my clinical experience at Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC), I was given responsibility for approximately five to eight patients each day. I would reference their chart, look up information regarding their condition, write an initial SOAP note, and determine the primary reason for dietetic intervention. Patient interviews were conducted and often educational materials, both written and verbal, were offered to the patient. After intervention I used the Med Tech system to chart my actions electronically. All of this was performed under the watch of my preceptor, Bill Swan.
Three case studies were performed on various patients during the course of these twelve weeks. Two mini-case studies followed by one major case study.
Mini Case Study #1--November 15, 2006
Mini Case Study #2--December 7, 2006
Major Case Study--January 24, 2006

Children's National Medical Center
Length of rotation: 2 weeks (1 week general inpatient, 1 week outpatient clinic)
Developed two educational handouts and presented one TPN order and case study. Performed general patient assessments.
Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) offered me a unique look at pediatric nutrition. Even though I had just finished 12 weeks of adult clinical nutrition I found that pediatric assessments were more detailed and the patient problems were very different. My time at CNMC was spent doing general inpatient assessments as well as working with outpatient education. Over the course of two weeks I was able to familiarize myself with various infant formulas and usage indications for each. I attended physician rounds, presented a TPN order and case study to the nutrition team, plotted multiple growth charts and assessed the meaning of each, developed patient educational materials, and spent an afternoon observing the feeding team.
The following are two resource samples I designed for outpatient education.
The Plate Method--Teaches patients what the plate method is and gives five sample menus.
Reading Food Labels--Spotlights three important numbers found on the food label that outpatient educators at
CNMC wanted their patients to focus on.
